You control the team from the sidelines, calling plays from a detailed playbook and managing the clock. The main objective is to outsmart the opponent, drive down the field, and score. Signature mechanics include selecting offensive and defensive formations, adjusting player assignments, and watching the action unfold in a text and graphic based play by play. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, with games taking a good chunk of time to complete. It feels like a genuine test of football knowledge rather than quick reflexes.

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
