Moon Patrol came out in 1982 as part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, a port of the arcade game originally developed by Irem. It was a straightforward side-scrolling shooter, one of many that filled arcades and early home computers, but it had a specific charm and a few clever ideas that made it stand out.
You control a lunar rover that automatically scrolls from left to right. Your job is simple: survive. You drive over craters, shoot flying saucers and alien bikers with your cannon, and jump over mines and rocks. The key mechanic is the two-button jump; a short press hops over small obstacles, while holding it longer clears bigger gaps. The screen advances in distinct sections, and the pace is relentless, with enemies and hazards coming in steady waves. It feels tense and focused, a constant test of timing and reflexes under pressure.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
