Game Overview

I picked up Mortal Kombat 4 for the Game Boy Color back in 1998, a portable version of Midway's arcade fighter. It was one of those late 90s handheld adaptations that tried to squeeze a console experience into your pocket, with mixed results. The graphics were understandably scaled down, but it carried the same dark, gritty atmosphere that the series was known for.

You control one of several fighters, each with their own special moves and a weapon you can summon during combat. The main goal is to defeat your opponent in one-on-one battles across a series of stages, leading up to a final boss. Signature mechanics include performing fatalities by inputting specific button combinations and using weapons like swords or hammers for extra damage. The pacing is fast, though the controls can feel a bit stiff on the Game Boy's buttons. It feels satisfying to land a well-timed special move and finish with a fatality, even on such a small screen.
