You pick a character like Scorpion or Sub-Zero and fight through a series of one-on-one matches. The main goal is to defeat each opponent and eventually beat the boss, Shinnok. Signature mechanics include the ability to perform special moves, like throwing a spear or an ice blast, and executing fatalities at the end of a match. The pacing is quick, matches are short, and the difficulty can spike sharply against later fighters. It feels satisfying to pull off a combo or a fatality on the go, even with the hardware limitations.
