Mystical Fighter came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by KID. It was one of those side-scrolling action games that felt right at home on the system, sitting alongside plenty of other fantasy brawlers at the time. It didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it had a certain style that made it stand out just enough.

You control a young warrior named Kaito, moving screen by screen through a feudal Japanese setting. Your main goal is to rescue a kidnapped princess by fighting through waves of enemy soldiers and mystical creatures. The combat is straightforward; you have a basic sword slash, but you can also pick up and throw enemies, which is surprisingly satisfying. Special magic scrolls let you clear the screen when things get too hectic. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially during boss fights. It feels like a solid, no-frills brawler that rewards quick reflexes and a little patience.
