Game Overview

Napoleon Senki is one of those deep-cut NES strategy games that never made it out of Japan—which is a shame, because it’s actually pretty solid for an 8-bit war sim. You’re basically Napoleon, moving little regiments of troops across a grid map of Europe, trying not to get your cavalry wiped out by British artillery (trust me, it happens). The sprites are tiny but charming, and there’s something satisfying about watching your line infantry push forward while cannons boom in the background.

It’s not as complex as later strategy games, but for 1988, the way it handles supply lines and terrain feels surprisingly thoughtful. Just don’t expect an English patch—you’ll be squinting at kanji for unit stats. Still, if you’re into retro war games, this one’s a neat time capsule.
