Game Overview

Nettou Garou 2 came out for the Game Boy in 1999, developed by SNK. It was part of a wave of handheld fighting games trying to bring arcade action to a pocket format. The hardware had its limits, but developers were getting better at squeezing responsive controls and decent animation out of it.

You control one of several fighters from the Fatal Fury series, like Terry Bogard or Rock Howard, and face off against opponents in one-on-one matches. The goal is to win rounds by depleting the opponent's health bar. Signature mechanics include charging your power gauge by holding buttons to unleash super moves, and the ability to sidestep between foreground and background planes to dodge attacks. The pacing is fast, with short rounds that keep matches tense, though the AI can be punishing on higher difficulties. It feels surprisingly fluid for a Game Boy title, with a real sense of impact when your special moves connect.
