Game Overview

I remember picking up Nettou King of Fighters '95 for the Game Boy back in 1996, a portable version of the arcade fighter developed by Takara. It was one of those games you'd play on the bus or between classes, a pocket-sized take on the Neo Geo favorite that tried to squeeze team battles and special moves onto that tiny green screen. For its time, it was a decent effort to bring something so flashy to such a limited handheld.

You pick a team of three fighters and take them through a series of one-on-one matches, trying to clear the tournament. The controls are simplified but functional; you have basic punches and kicks, plus special moves executed with simple directional inputs and buttons. The main mechanics involve building up a power gauge by attacking or blocking, which lets you unleash super moves for big damage. Matches are fast, and the AI can be pretty tough even on normal difficulty, so you learn to time your dodges and capitalize on openings. It feels satisfying to land a well-timed combo and hear that crunchy sound effect through the speaker.
