Bid for land, drill for oil, manage your finances, and outsmart rivals to dominate the market in this classic business sim.
Oil Barons was part of the MS-DOS Classic Games collection, though it didn't originate there; it was originally published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. in the early 1990s. It fits right in with the era's business sims, where spreadsheets met simple graphics, and you managed resources more than reflexes. It wasn't about flash; it was about the slow, tense burn of high-stakes investment.
You play as an oil prospector starting with limited capital, competing against computer opponents at auctions to buy land leases. The main goal is to drill for oil, sell it for profit, and reinvest to dominate the market. Key mechanics include bidding against rivals for territory, managing your cash flow to avoid bankruptcy, and dealing with dry wells that drain your funds without return. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, with sudden spikes of tension when a big bid goes through or a new well comes in. It feels like a tightrope walk between ambition and ruin, where every decision carries weight and a bad gamble can wipe you out in minutes.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
