You pick your mech (I always went for the speedy Shadow, even though it crumples like tin foil if you mess up), then it's just you, some janky DOS-era pixels, and the most satisfying crunch when your piledriver connects.
The tournament mode's the real hook—you start as this nobody pilot scraping by, and by the end, you're tweaking your bot's armor between rounds like some grease-stained mechanic. The soundtrack? Pure 90s synth that somehow makes a 2D robot kick feel epic. Sure, the graphics won't blow anyone away now, but there's something about the way the screen shakes when Gargoyle lands its stupidly slow (but oh-so-gratifying) earthquake punch that modern games just don't get.
It's the kind of game where you lose three matches in a row, swear you're done, then immediately restart because this time you'll nail the timing on that flamethrower combo.
