One Must Fall came out in 1994, a fighting game from Diversions Entertainment for MS-DOS. It was part of that wave of PC games trying to capture the arcade feel at home, back when a good joystick was your best friend. The setup was simple: a global robot tournament, but the execution had a weight to it that a lot of other games missed.
You pick a pilot and a giant robot, each with different strengths and a unique special move. The goal is to win the tournament, fighting through a bracket of opponents one by one. The signature mechanics are the damage system, where individual parts of your robot can break, affecting your performance, and the ability to grab and throw your opponent. It's not a button masher; you have to time your attacks and manage your limited energy for special moves. The pacing is deliberate, and the AI can be punishing if you get careless. It feels like controlling a real, heavy machine that's falling apart as you fight to keep it together.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
