Pit Fighter came out on the Game Boy in 1991, published by THQ. It was a portable version of the arcade fighting game, arriving at a time when the Game Boy was full of simple, straightforward action titles. This one tried to bring a more brutal, digitized style to the handheld, though it definitely had its own look and feel compared to the bigger console and arcade releases.

You choose one of three fighters and battle through a series of opponents in one-on-one fights. The main goal is to defeat each enemy and become the champion of the pit. The game uses large, digitized sprites that were unusual for the Game Boy, and you have a basic moveset including punches, kicks, and a few special throws. Matches are short and often feel clunky due to the limited animation and slow response. It’s a rough experience that captures some of the arcade’s rawness but loses a lot in the translation.
