Planet Of The Apes (Venom) (EU) is a side-scroller that feels like a rough, low-budget take on Prince of Persia but with apes. You play as Ulysses, a stranded astronaut in a world where apes rule and humans are nearly extinct. The first few minutes are all about jumping over pits and dodging spear-throwing apes while armed with just a knife.
The levels are stiff, and the controls take some getting used to—sometimes you’ll miss a jump because the timing feels off. But there’s something oddly compelling about the grainy cutscenes lifted straight from the old movies. It’s janky, but if you grew up with the films, the atmosphere might pull you in.
By the third level, you finally get a pistol, which makes combat less of a chore. Still, the ape soldiers swarm you, and the platforming never quite feels smooth. Planet Of The Apes (Venom) (EU) isn’t a hidden gem, but it’s a weird little piece of GBA history for fans of the franchise.
