Planet of the Apes on Game Boy Advance came out in 2001 from Ubi Soft. It was one of those licensed games that tried to do something a little different on the handheld, mixing action with some light platforming. The GBA had a lot of these kinds of experiments, and this one stood out for its setting more than anything else.
You control Ulysses, a human astronaut, and your main goal is to survive and find a way off the hostile planet. The gameplay is built around screen by screen exploration, moving through dense jungles and crumbling human structures. You start with just a knife for melee combat, but later find firearms like a shotgun to deal with the aggressive apes more effectively. The pacing is deliberate, with a fair amount of backtracking and some challenging enemy ambushes that keep you alert. It feels like a tense, methodical crawl through a world that wants you dead.
