Planet of the Apes on Game Boy Color came out in 2001, published by Ubi Soft. It was part of that wave of licensed games that tried to capture the feel of a movie on a handheld, back when the hardware was still pretty limited. You don't see many people talk about it now, but it had a certain moody look that fit the platform.
You play as astronaut Ulysses, navigating side-scrolling levels filled with hostile apes and environmental hazards. The main goal is to survive, find key items, and progress through the story by exploring areas screen by screen. Combat involves using a sword or later finding a gun, while platforming requires careful jumps and timing to avoid pits and enemies. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with limited continues making mistakes costly. It feels tense and methodical, like every step forward is a small victory.
