Planet of the Apes for the Game Boy Color came out in 2001, developed and published by Ubi Soft Entertainment. You control an astronaut stranded on the planet, moving screen by screen through jungles and caves while fighting off apes with your fists or occasionally picking up a weapon like a bow. The main goal is to find pieces of your broken ship scattered across the map, which involves some light exploration and backtracking. Combat is straightforward but a bit clunky; you punch or shoot enemies, and the hit detection can be unforgiving. The pacing is slow at times, with some areas feeling empty or repetitive, but there's a certain charm in pushing through the jank. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to turn the license into a playable adventure.
