Planet of the Apes for the Game Boy Color came out in 2001, developed and published by Ubi Soft. It was one of those licensed games that showed up late in the handheld's life, trying to squeeze a bit more out of the hardware before the Advance took over. The game loosely follows the plot of the 2001 film, putting you in the role of astronaut Leo Davidson after he crash-lands on a world ruled by intelligent apes.

You control Leo through a series of side-scrolling levels, moving screen by screen while avoiding traps and fighting hostile apes. Your main goal is to find a way off the planet, which involves navigating ruins, jungles, and ape settlements. Combat is simple; you use a weak energy pistol at first, and later acquire a sword for melee attacks. The level design can feel confusing, with some backtracking and hidden paths. Enemies respawn when you leave and re-enter screens, which adds to the challenge. It’s not an easy game, and the controls can feel a little stiff, but there’s a certain charm in pushing through its rough edges.
