Game Overview

Pocket Color Block (Japan) is one of those Game Boy Color puzzlers that somehow slipped under the radar—which is a shame, because it’s got this weirdly satisfying rhythm to it. You’re dropping colored blocks, sure, but there’s a twist where matching them clears entire rows in these little cascades that feel way more tactile than they should for a 20-year-old game.

At first, I thought it was just another Tetris clone, but after a few rounds, the way the colors interact starts messing with your strategy. Bright reds and blues pop against the GBC’s screen, and the music has that bouncy, slightly offbeat charm only late-90s handheld games could pull off. It’s the kind of thing you’ll lose half an hour to without realizing it, especially if you’re a sucker for that era’s chunky pixel art.

Definitely worth digging up if you’ve got a soft spot for forgotten puzzle games. It holds up better than it has any right to.
