Pokémon Ruby on the GBA still holds up. The first thing you notice is how different Hoenn feels compared to other regions—more water routes, more hidden areas tucked behind secret paths. You start with Torchic, Treecko, or Mudkip, and that choice actually matters because some gyms are brutal if you don't plan ahead.

I remember getting stuck around the third gym, realizing my team wasn't balanced enough. Had to backtrack, catch some new Pokémon, grind a bit. The game doesn't hold your hand, which I like. The music in Rustboro City still plays in my head sometimes.

It's not perfect—some of the water routes drag on, and the rival battles can feel uneven. But the core loop of catching and training Pokémon is as satisfying as ever. Pokémon Ruby makes you work for that Champion title.
