You wake up as a Pokémon—yeah, that quiz actually matters—and crawl through shifting dungeons where every turn could drop you into a monster ambush or a lifesaving berry stash. Your team nags you like real buddies while you agonize over whether to use that last Reviver Seed.

Game Overview

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (the Japanese version, Toki no Tankentai) is one of those DS games I keep coming back to. You start by answering this weird personality quiz—apparently I’m a Totodile—and then wake up as a Pokémon in a world where humans are just myths. The dungeons shift every time you enter, so you’re never quite sure what’s around the next corner.

What I love is how your little team actually feels like friends. Chatty, sometimes annoying friends who still bail you out when a monster house spawns. The turn-based combat’s simple at first, but later you’ll be sweating over which berries to hoard and whether to risk that ominous-looking hallway. Just don’t get too attached to your Reviver Seeds.

It’s got that classic Mystery Dungeon grind, but the story sneaks up on you with some surprisingly emotional moments. I still hum the soundtrack while doing dishes.
