Pokemon Heart Gold, released for the Nintendo DS in 2009 by Game Freak, is a remake of the 1999 Game Boy Color title Pokemon Gold. You control a young trainer who explores the world, captures wild Pokemon, and battles other trainers with the goal of defeating the eight gym leaders and eventually the Elite Four. Signature mechanics include having your lead Pokemon follow behind you on the map, the use of the touch screen for easy item and Pokemon management, and the inclusion of the Pokéwalker accessory, a pedometer that let you transfer a Pokemon to gain steps and find items while away from the console. The pacing is deliberate, with a lengthy main quest that includes a full post game journey to the Kanto region, and the difficulty feels balanced for both newcomers and series veterans. It feels rewarding to build a team and see your companions walking beside you as you travel through familiar towns with a fresh sense of detail.
