Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness is one of those DS games that just sticks with you. You wake up as a Pokémon—no trainer, no explanation—and suddenly you're teaming up with quirky little creatures to crawl through ever-changing dungeons. The turn-based combat feels simple at first, but you quickly learn that positioning and type matchups actually matter when a pack of wild Zubats corners you.
What really got me was the story. It starts off lighthearted, with your partner Pokémon dragging you into their dream of starting an exploration team, but then it takes some surprisingly emotional turns. The pixel art and music do a lot of the heavy lifting—there’s something weirdly cozy about huddling in a tiny base camp between dungeon runs while that melancholic soundtrack plays.
Fair warning: the dungeon layouts are randomly generated, so sometimes you’ll get lucky with a straight path to the stairs, and other times you’ll wander in circles for what feels like forever. Still, it’s hard to put down once you get into the rhythm of recruiting new team members and uncovering the mystery behind your transformation. The post-game content alone could keep you busy for weeks.
