Game Overview

Pokémon Pinball came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, developed by Jupiter and published by Nintendo. It was one of those games that made the hardware feel special, especially if you had the rumble cartridge that shook with every solid hit. At a time when the system was packed with RPGs and platformers, this was a straightforward, clever spin on pinball that just felt good to hold and play.

You control the flippers, aiming to keep the ball in play while racking up points by hitting bumpers, targets, and ramps. The main goal is to catch all 150 Pokémon by activating the Catch 'Em mode, which lets you aim your ball at specific Pokémon on the table to add them to your Pokédex. Key mechanics include tilting the table to nudge the ball (without tilting too far), evolving your caught Pokémon by hitting evolution lights repeatedly, and triggering mini-games like the slot machine or Pikachu's saving bonus. The pacing is fast and demanding; one bad bounce can end a great run. It feels like a race against your own reflexes, with every shot carrying the thrill of discovery or the sting of a missed opportunity.
