Popeye for the NES came out in 1983, published by Nintendo. It was one of the earlier games on the system, a straightforward arcade adaptation that didn't try to overcomplicate things. You're just Popeye, doing what Popeye does.

You control Popeye across single-screen stages, avoiding Bluto and collecting hearts that Olive Oyl drops from above. The main goal is to gather all the hearts before time runs out or Bluto catches you. Your main tools are punching away incoming enemies and grabbing cans of spinach, which temporarily let you knock Bluto off the screen. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty ramps up noticeably after the first few levels. It feels like a tense, silly race against a bully and the clock.
