POW - Prisoners Of War is a side-scrolling beat 'em up on the NES where you play as a soldier trying to escape a prison camp. The first few minutes are rough—you start with weak punches, and the guards swarm you fast. It feels like a desperate scramble more than a heroic breakout.
The controls are stiff, typical for early NES brawlers, but there’s something satisfying about slowly upgrading your moves as you progress. By the second stage, you’re tossing knives and landing dropkicks, which helps balance out the frustrating enemy spam.
Visually, it’s gritty for an NES game—barbed wire, dark corridors, and guards that look more like thugs than soldiers. The music is tense, almost oppressive, which fits the theme. POW - Prisoners Of War isn’t the smoothest brawler, but it nails the feeling of a messy, chaotic escape.
