Game Overview

Power Athlete came out on the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Kaneko. It was one of those early fighting games that tried to carve out a space on the console, arriving not long after Street Fighter II had already set a high bar. The roster is a mix of martial artists and more outlandish characters, each with their own exaggerated style and moves.

You pick a fighter and work through a series of one-on-one matches, trying to deplete your opponent's health bar with basic attacks and special moves. The controls can feel a bit stiff, and some moves, like the ninja's teleport, are tricky to execute consistently. Matches are often fast and chaotic, with the AI not hesitating to punish mistakes. Despite its rough edges, there's a strange charm in landing a super move and watching the screen erupt with flashy, pixelated effects.
