Primal Rage on Game Boy came out in 1995, developed by Probe Entertainment and published by Time Warner Interactive. It was a time when handheld ports of arcade fighters were common, but translating a game with large, detailed characters onto the small, monochrome screen was always a challenge. This version tried to capture the feel of the arcade cabinet, where you controlled prehistoric beasts in a fight for dominance.
You pick one of several giant monsters, like a gorilla or a T-rex, and battle other creatures across a series of one-on-one fights. The main goal is to defeat your opponent by depleting their health bar, using a mix of basic attacks and special moves executed with directional inputs and button combinations. Matches are short and straightforward, but the controls can feel stiff, and pulling off certain moves reliably on the Game Boy's two-button setup isn't always easy. Despite the technical limitations, there's a strange charm in landing a heavy hit and watching your foe stagger; it feels raw and unrefined, but satisfying in a primitive kind of way.
