Game Overview

Professor Layton and the Spectre’s Call is one of those games where you’ll spend half your time scratching your head over puzzles and the other half completely wrapped up in its weird little mystery. You play as the professor and his apprentice Luke, rolling into the foggy town of Misthallery to figure out why a ghostly spectre keeps terrorizing the place.

The puzzles are everywhere—some hidden in plain sight, others tucked behind conversations with the town’s oddball residents. I remember getting stuck on this sliding block puzzle early on and just staring at my DS for way too long. But when you finally crack one, it feels like a tiny victory.

What really pulls you in, though, is the story. There’s something charmingly old-school about the way it unfolds, with hand-drawn cutscenes and a soundtrack that makes even the quietest moments feel important. If you like mysteries that actually make you think (and occasionally groan at a particularly sneaky puzzle), this one’s a solid pick.
