Psycho Fox came out for the Sega Master System in 1989, developed and published by Sega. It was one of those platformers that felt a bit different from the usual fare on the system, offering a quirkier, more unpredictable adventure than many of its contemporaries. You control the titular fox through a series of side scrolling levels, with the main goal being to reach the end of each stage and defeat the boss. The standout feature is the ability to transform into three other animals by finding hidden icons: a hippo that can smash through certain floors, a monkey that climbs walls and ceilings, and a tiger that attacks with a quick punch. You also get a little bird companion that follows you and can be thrown at enemies or objects, though it often gets in the way at crucial moments. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty comes from navigating tricky enemy placements and timing your transformations correctly. It feels chaotic and inventive, like the developers threw every idea they had into the mix to see what would stick.
