I first played Puzzle Bobble 2 on MAME 0.243, emulating the 1999 Taito arcade release. It's a sequel that builds on the original's formula without reinventing it, fitting right into the late 90s arcade scene where straightforward, addictive puzzle games still held their ground. The presentation is clean, the colors are bright, and it feels exactly like the kind of thing you'd drop a few coins into between bigger, flashier cabinets.

You control a small cannon at the bottom of the screen, aiming and firing colored bubbles upward to match groups of three or more of the same color, which then pop and disappear. The main goal is to clear the entire screen of bubbles before any descend low enough to end your game. Key mechanics include banking shots off the side walls for tricky angles, and creating chain reactions by dropping clusters to make higher bubbles fall. The pacing starts relaxed but quickly becomes frantic as the ceiling gradually lowers, demanding quick thinking and precision. It feels satisfying to set off a big combo and watch the whole structure collapse just in time.
