Game Overview

I remember picking up Q*bert for the Game Boy back in 1992, published by Gottlieb. It was one of those classic arcade ports that felt right at home on the handheld, a straightforward puzzle-action game without the frills common in later releases. In an era where portable games were often simplified or reimagined, this version stuck close to its arcade roots, offering a pure, challenging experience on a small screen.

You control Q*bert, a round character with a hose-like nose, hopping diagonally across a pyramid of cubes. Your goal is to change the color of every cube by landing on them, while avoiding enemies like snakes, bouncing balls, and the persistent purple snake Coily. If you get cornered, you can jump onto floating discs to escape off the top or bottom of the screen, resetting your position but leaving the level layout unchanged. The game moves quickly, demanding precise jumps and constant awareness of enemy patterns; one misstep often leads to a chain of mistakes. It feels tense and rewarding when you clear a stage, only to face a slightly more complicated pyramid next.
