Play R-Type Amiga Online
1987 side-scrolling shooter. Pilot the R-9 spacecraft with detachable Force pod. Features weapon upgrades, biomechanical enemies, and strategic positioning. Amiga platform.

I first played R-Type on the Amiga back in 1987, a conversion handled by Electric Dreams Software. It arrived during a time when the Amiga was proving itself as a serious machine for arcade-perfect ports, and this one was no slouch. The game stood out immediately with its detailed, sometimes grotesque, alien designs and the sheer clarity of its visuals, which felt like a genuine step up from many other home systems at the time.
You control the R-9 fighter, a small but powerful ship tasked with clearing each horizontally-scrolling stage of a relentless alien force. Your main objective is survival, navigating through tight corridors and open spaces filled with intricate enemy patterns. The signature mechanic is the Force, a detachable pod that can be shot ahead to attack or anchored to your ship for rear defense; managing its position is everything. You also collect power-ups that cycle through different weapon types, like the penetrating Wave Cannon or spreading missiles. The pacing is deliberate and the difficulty is punishing, demanding memorization of enemy spawns and environmental hazards. It feels like a tense, strategic battle of attrition where every mistake costs you dearly.
