R-Type on the Sega Master System came out in 1988, a port of Irem's arcade shooter. It was one of the more ambitious shoot 'em ups on the system, trying to bring a complex arcade experience home when many other games felt simpler or scaled back.

You pilot a small, nimble spacecraft through side-scrolling stages filled with enemy ships and environmental hazards. Your main goal is simply to survive each stage and defeat the massive boss waiting at the end. Your ship has a standard shot, but the real strategy comes from your Force pod, a detachable orb that can be shot ahead or anchored to your ship's rear for defense. Collecting power-ups changes your main weapon and strengthens the Force. The game is brutally difficult, demanding careful positioning and memorization of enemy patterns. It feels tense and demanding, a real test of patience and skill.
