Game Overview

Rally X is a 1980 arcade game by Namco, playable today through MAME. It arrived in arcades when maze games were common, but it stood out by putting you behind the wheel instead of on foot. The game has a simple, almost abstract look, with a small maze on screen and a handful of enemy cars that are much faster than you.

You control a small blue race car, navigating a single-screen maze to collect all the flags before your fuel runs out. The main threat comes from red enemy cars that hunt you down relentlessly; they are faster and will corner you if you are not careful. Your only defense is a limited supply of smoke screens, which temporarily stun any pursuers and let you slip away. The pacing is tense and methodical, demanding quick decisions about when to flee and when to use a precious smoke bomb. It feels like a tight, stressful game of cat and mouse where every mistake costs you a life.
