Game Overview

Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires came out on the Nintendo DS in 2007, published by Namco Bandai Games. It was part of that wave of DS titles trying to do something different with the hardware, a strategy game that used both screens and the stylus to put you right in the middle of a feudal Japanese power struggle.

You control the armies of one of three warring clans, dragging your units across the strategic map on the bottom screen to engage enemy forces. The main goal is to conquer all the territories on the map. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen to position your spearmen, cavalry, and archers for tactical advantage, and then engaging in one-on-one touch-based duels when your general challenges an enemy leader. The pacing is methodical, broken up by these sudden, tense duels that test your reflexes. It feels like a chess match that occasionally demands you put down the pieces and win a knife fight.
