Play RealSports Tennis Online
Timing lobs over your buddy’s blocky player never gets old, and doubles mode turns into a hilarious scramble of pixel collisions. The janky physics somehow make every match feel tense.
RealSports Tennis came out for the Atari 2600 in 1983, published by Atari themselves. It was part of their RealSports line, which tried to bring more realistic sports simulations to the console during a time when many games were still quite simple or abstract. This one stood out for attempting to capture the feel of tennis on hardware that was really being pushed to its limits.
You control a single, blocky player on a side view of the court, swinging at a ball that bounces with surprisingly decent physics for the era. The main objective is to outscore your opponent, either the computer or a second player, by hitting the ball past them. Key mechanics include positioning your player to meet the ball and timing your swing; you can perform different shots like lobs or volleys based on your positioning and when you press the button. The pacing is quick, and matches can become difficult against a persistent opponent. It feels surprisingly engaging for such a basic-looking game, especially when you get into a long rally.
