River Patrol came out in 1981 as an arcade game from Orca. It was part of that wave of early 80s releases where developers were experimenting with different kinds of action and movement, trying to stand out in crowded arcades. It didn't have the flash of some other titles, but it had its own kind of tension.
You control a small rescue boat navigating a winding river. Your goal is to pick up swimmers stranded in the water and ferry them to safety. The challenge comes from managing your boat's constantly dropping water level; you have to periodically steer under waterfalls to refill it. Alligators patrol the river, and logs drift unpredictably, forcing quick maneuvers. The pacing is relentless, with mistakes costing you precious time and lives. It feels like a constant race against your own sinking ship.
