Road Rash came out on the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Electronic Arts. It was one of those games that felt different from everything else on the platform, a racing game that wasn't really about clean laps or perfect lines. You control a motorcycle racer, and the goal is to finish in the top three to advance to the next, faster race. The signature mechanics are the combat; you can punch, kick, and swing a chain or club at other riders to knock them off their bikes. You also have to manage your speed and lean into turns to avoid wiping out on the winding roads. The pacing is frantic, and the difficulty is punishing, especially when the police join the chase. It feels like a chaotic, violent scramble where survival is just as important as speed.
