Game Overview

Alright, so Roger Clemens' MVP Baseball on NES is one of those old-school baseball games where you get Clemens (obviously) and a bunch of made-up teams—no real MLB here, except for the man himself pitching for the Boston Hornets. The teams have names like the San Francisco Quakes or the New York Buffalos, which honestly sound more like minor league or XFL teams, but hey, it's the late '80s, what do you expect?

You can play a quick exhibition game or dive into a full season mode, tracking your team’s progress on a calendar. Pitching feels pretty involved—you adjust speed, spin, and placement, and there’s even a little window showing baserunners so you can try to pick them off. Batting? Timing is everything. Swing too early or late, and you’re either whiffing or sending it foul. And if you do connect, the camera shifts to this weird low-angle view where your fielder shrinks as they run deeper into the outfield. It’s a little janky, but it works.

Oh, and if you’re playing season mode, you’ll need to jot down passwords to save your progress—none of that fancy auto-save stuff. Two-player exhibition mode is there if you’ve got a buddy and a second controller, which was basically the only way to make sports games fun back then.
