Game Overview

Romancing SaGa came out on the Super Nintendo in 1992, developed by Square. It was part of that wave of ambitious, sprawling RPGs that really tried to push what the console could do with storytelling and world design, offering a different flavor from the more straightforward adventures of the time.

You choose one of eight main characters, each with their own starting circumstances, and then you're set loose on a large world map to explore screen by screen. Your goal is to follow your chosen hero's personal quest while also dealing with a larger, encroaching evil. Combat is turn-based, but your weapon and magic skills improve through use in battle, not by gaining traditional levels. The game is notoriously open and difficult, with many events and dungeons accessible out of order and no guiding arrow pointing the way. It feels like charting your own course through a world that is indifferent to your survival, which makes every small victory genuinely satisfying.
