Play Sangokushi (Japan) Online
Pick a warlord, juggle armies and alliances on a grid map, and outmaneuver rivals—those early NES menus hide a surprisingly deep Three Kingdoms sim once you push past the language barrier.

I first played Sangokushi on the NES back in 1985, a Koei release that felt different from the usual platformers and action games of the era. It was a turn based strategy game set in ancient China, based on the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. You had to manage territories, form alliances, and lead armies in a bid to unify the country under your rule.
You control one of several warlords, each with their own starting position and officers. The main objective is to conquer all of China by expanding your territory through military campaigns and diplomacy. Key mechanics include moving armies across a grid based map, managing gold and food supplies for your provinces, and engaging in tactical battles when forces meet. The pacing is deliberate, requiring careful planning each turn, and the difficulty can be steep due to the AI's aggressive expansion and the need to balance multiple resources. It feels like a slow, thoughtful chess match where every decision carries weight for seasons to come.
