Play SD Gundam - Gachapon Senshi 5 - Battle of Universal Century (Japan) Online
Tiny chibi Gundams duke it out on grid-based maps—terrain and unit matchups matter more than you'd think at first glance. That satisfying NES crunch when your Zaku blows up someone's Gundam.

SD Gundam: Gachapon Senshi 5 - Battle of Universal Century came out for the NES in 1991, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai. It was part of that wave of late-era Famicom games that tried to squeeze a little more strategy out of the aging hardware, a niche title for fans already deep into the Universal Century lore.
You control a squad of super-deformed mobile suits on a grid-based map, moving them turn by turn to wipe out the enemy forces. The main objective is to clear each screen of adversaries, using careful positioning to gain advantages from terrain and unit-specific weapon ranges. Signature mechanics include a rock-paper-scissors style damage system where certain unit types are strong or weak against others, and the ability to capture and pilot enemy mobile suits you defeat. The pacing is deliberate, almost puzzle-like, demanding you think a few moves ahead to avoid losing your limited units. It feels like commanding a pocket-sized war where every decision has weight.
