Play SEGA Superstars Tennis (SQUiRE) Online

Sonic serves while AiAi volleys back on courts ripped from SEGA classics—half the fun is seeing Jet Set Radio guy try to play tennis. The DS touch controls work, but I just mashed buttons for those ridiculous character special moves.

Game Overview

SEGA Superstars Tennis came out for the Nintendo DS in 2008, developed by Sumo Digital. It was one of those crossover sports games that felt right at home on the DS, a system packed with quirky, character-driven titles. The game pulls from a bunch of SEGA franchises, so you get courts based on places like Sonic’s Green Hill Zone or the streets of Jet Set Radio, which gives it a distinct visual personality without trying too hard.

You pick a SEGA character and play tennis matches against CPU or human opponents. The main goal is to win tournaments or just have fun in exhibition matches. Signature mechanics include using the touch screen for special shots, though many players just rely on button controls for simplicity. Each character has a unique super move that triggers with enough energy; Sonic might turn into a ball of lightning, while Amigo from Samba de Amigo shakes maracas to distract. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty stays manageable, even when the AI starts reading your shots a little too well. It feels light and silly, like a party game that doesn’t take itself seriously at all.
