Shadowgate came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989, developed by Kemco. It was part of that wave of early adventure games that really leaned into the hardware's limitations to create a specific, claustrophobic mood. You weren't saving a princess in a bright, colorful world; you were just trying to survive a very dark castle.

You control an unnamed hero whose goal is to stop the Warlock Lord from summoning a beast to destroy the world. The gameplay is entirely about screen by screen exploration, where you use a verb-based interface to look at, take, and use objects. You manage a torch that constantly burns down, forcing you to find new ones or be left in lethal darkness. The pacing is slow and deliberate because a wrong move, like walking through the wrong archway or opening a chest carelessly, can mean instant death. It feels like a tense, methodical puzzle where the castle itself is your opponent.
