Game Overview

Shadowgate Return (Japan) for Game Boy Color is one of those games that makes you feel like you're actually creeping through a cursed castle—except you're hunched over your GBC, squinting at pixelated torches and wondering if that skeleton is about to jump scare you. It's got that same eerie, "why did I just die?" charm as the original NES version, but now with moody greens and sickly purples that somehow make everything creepier.

You'll poke at strange symbols, hesitate before pulling levers (because half of them crush you), and accidentally set yourself on fire at least once. The puzzles are just obscure enough to feel rewarding without being totally unfair—though I still got stuck on that damn mirror puzzle for way too long. And yeah, the deaths are hilariously over-the-top, like some gothic horror cartoon. If you're into slow-burn adventures where every click could be your last, this little Japan-only gem is weirdly addictive. Just keep a walkthrough handy unless you enjoy pixelated suffering.
