Shock Troopers came out in 1997 for arcades, developed by Saurus. It was part of that late 90s wave of top-down shooters, a style that felt familiar but still had room for surprises. The game didn't try to reinvent the wheel, just offered a solid, explosive run-and-gun experience.
You control one of eight mercenaries, each with a unique weapon, and fight through enemy territory to rescue a kidnapped scientist. The game uses a multi-path stage structure, letting you choose your route through jungle, mountain, or valley settings. Signature mechanics include the ability to roll or dash to avoid bullets, a three-character squad system where you can switch between members on the fly, and large, screen-filling boss encounters. The pacing is fast and the difficulty is relentless, demanding quick reflexes and smart use of your team's abilities. It feels chaotic and satisfying, like you're barely surviving each firefight by the skin of your teeth.
