I picked up Shrek: Smash n' Crash Racing for the Game Boy Advance back in 2006, published by Activision. It was one of those licensed kart racers that seemed to pop up for every big movie around that time, and it fit right in with the handheld's library of colorful, simple multiplayer games. You didn't need a powerhouse console to have a bit of chaotic fun with friends, and this game understood that perfectly.
You choose from a roster of characters like Shrek, Donkey, or Fiona and race through tracks inspired by locations from the films. The main goal is straightforward: finish first. To help with that, you can pick up items like exploding pumpkins to lob at opponents or hop on a dragon for a quick speed boost. The tracks are filled with shortcuts and hazards, and the AI can be surprisingly aggressive, which keeps you on your toes. It feels exactly like driving through a rowdy, unpredictable party in the swamp.
