Sonic Gems Collection came out on the GameCube in 2005, a Sega release that gathered some of the more obscure or hard-to-find Sonic titles from older platforms. It felt like a companion piece to the earlier Sonic Mega Collection, but this one dug deeper into the back catalog, pulling games from the Sega Saturn and even the Sega CD. It was a strange, almost archival release for its time, offering a mix of mainline oddities and spin-offs that many players had only heard about.

You control Sonic, or a selection of his friends and rivals, across a dozen different games, each with its own objectives. In Sonic CD, you run and spin through time-altering stages to destroy robot generators and secure a good future. Sonic the Fighters has you throwing punches and special moves in a polygonal arena fighter, while games like Vectorman 2 shift the focus to run-and-gun action with morphing abilities. The pacing varies wildly from title to title; some feel brisk and polished, others clunky or experimental. Playing it now is like flipping through a scrapbook of ideas Sega was trying out in the '90s.
