I picked up Sonic the Hedgehog - Genesis on the Game Boy Advance, a 2006 release from Sega. It's a portable conversion of the original 16-bit Sonic, arriving late in the GBA's life when many players had already moved on to the DS. The hardware does its best, but it's clear this was a straightforward port, not a reimagining.

You control Sonic, dashing through vibrant zones, smashing robot enemies, and gathering rings. The main goal is to reach the end of each act, defeating Dr. Robotnik's contraptions along the way. Signature mechanics include building momentum to race through loop-de-loops and using spin dashes to plow through obstacles. The game moves quickly, though some sections, especially the notorious Labyrinth Zone, demand careful timing and can feel punishing. It feels fast and responsive, even if the smaller screen sometimes cramps the sense of speed.
