Game Overview
This is the GBA port of the original Sonic—the one that kicked off the whole "gotta go fast" thing. You’re Sonic, a blue hedgehog with serious attitude, blasting through loop-de-loops and bouncing off badniks like they’re made of cardboard. The speed feels wild compared to other platformers at the time, especially when you hit those downhill stretches and just fly.
It’s not all about zooming, though. Some zones force you to slow down and actually platform (looking at you, Labyrinth Zone), but even then, there’s this tension between wanting to rush and needing to not drown. The music’s still a banger, even on GBA’s tinny little speaker. Just don’t expect the graphics to be as crisp as the Genesis version—this is a handheld, after all.
If you’ve never played the original, it’s a weirdly punishing game by modern standards, but that’s part of the charm. You’ll probably lose a lot of rings.
