Play Sopwith Online
Pilot a biplane in Sopwith, dodging enemy fire, bombing bases, and engaging in dogfights while managing your plane's tricky controls and landing safely.
Sopwith came out in 1984 for MS-DOS, developed by David L. Clark. It was one of those early PC games that felt genuinely new, a simple flight combat sim that ran on hardware most people could actually afford. In an era dominated by text adventures and arcade ports, it gave you a tiny, open sky and a plane to fly, which felt like a small miracle.
You pilot a World War I style biplane, maneuvering across a side-scrolling landscape filled with enemy hangars, balloons, and other aircraft. Your main goal is to destroy enemy bases while protecting your own from attack. Key mechanics include managing your plane's delicate physics; a steep climb can cause a stall, and rough landings will damage your craft. You also have a limited supply of bombs to drop on targets and a machine gun for dogfights. The pacing is tense and deliberate, demanding careful throttle control and positioning rather than reckless speed. It feels raw and immediate, a game of split-second corrections and the constant threat of a crash.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
