Space Ace II: Borf’s Revenge is one of those weird, frantic laserdisc games where you’re basically playing an interactive cartoon. You guide Dexter—this scrawny kid who can turn into the buff Space Ace—through a series of quick-time events before Borf’s goons wreck him. The whole thing plays out in these gorgeous Don Bluth animated scenes, but don’t get too comfortable staring at them—you’ve got about half a second to hit the right key or watch Dexter get vaporized in some ridiculous way.
It’s all about memorization and timing. You’ll die a lot at first (those three lives disappear fast), but eventually, you start anticipating when to dodge left or mash the shoot button. The Amiga version cuts some scenes short, and yeah, swapping 12 floppies is a pain, but the animation still looks fantastic for its time. Just don’t expect deep gameplay—it’s more like a rhythm game disguised as a Saturday morning cartoon.
